RADIO 4EB 98.1FM

(Brisbane)

Radio 4EB commenced broadcasting on December 1, 1979, initially on the AM band at 1053 kHz. The station was established by the Ethnic Broadcasting Association of Queensland [EBAQ], formed by a group of Brisbane residents interested in creating an ethnic radio station. The first test broadcast took place from the top floor of the Ridge Motel in Spring Hill in 1977.

In its early days, 4EB operated from a modest studio above a Greek bakery in Brisbane's West End. By 1981, the station moved to larger premises on Montague Road, West End, and commenced full-time broadcasting. In 1988, 4EB settled into a purpose-built heritage-style building at 140 Main Street, Kangaroo Point, securing its permanent home.

Over the years, the station expanded its programming to include over 50 language groups, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the region. On December 1, 2001, 4EB transitioned to the FM band at 98.1 MHz to enhance sound quality and reach. In May 2011, the station launched its digital radio channel, GLOBAL, focusing on world and traditional music, as well as informative multilingual and English programs.
